Petition Letter
To Dr. Atkinson, I hope you??re well
My name is Abdul Mosli (20171769), I'm a 4th year PSYC student. I am appealing to enroll in PSYC 301 (Fall, 2022). If my appeal is granted, I would ideally like to enroll in lab 3987, but if this is not possible then I would prefer lab 3986.
I was initially enrolled in the course, but switched to a waitlist because I wanted a different timeslot (3987 Wednesday 11:30 - 2:30) for my lab. At the day of the enrollment deadline, I was in the first position for the waitlist, so holding out some hope that someone could be waiting until the deadline to drop or switch, I decided to wait until the end of the day to switch back to an open timeslot for my lab, in which I was originally enrolled (3986, Tuesday 2:30-5:30). I'm sure you see where this is going by now, I set a reminder on my phone for 11pm to switch the timeslot, and realized I missed the deadline at 12:30am, leaving me unenrolled in PSYC 301.
I have struggled with undiagnosed ADHD throughout university. It really took a toll on my studies in my second and third year: my grades dropped dramatically from first year, and I dropped a number of courses because I could not manage the workload. Even with the reduced load, I struggled to keep up with my studies, but managed to end both semesters without any major issues. ADHD has affected my studies in many ways, but for the sake of being concise, I??ll only describe what??s relevant to this specific case, which is that it impairs my short term and working memory, making it difficult for me to remember things especially when I am engaged in a different activity. Over the summer I was diagnosed and prescribed medication, which has helped me manage my condition better, and I am now in a position to improve my academic performance from the previous 2 years.
I missed my deadline because I unexpectedly received a call from a friend at around 10pm, and we ended up talking on facetime for hours (I was using my laptop with do not disturb turned on, so the reminder didn't show up there, and I was not using my phone which had my reminder). This was not planned, I hadn??t been expecting to be busy or engaged in anything by that time, and at the time of the call, expected it to last only a few minutes. I was fixated on our conversation and a game we were playing, and completely forgot about my reminder and the deadline despite keeping it in mind for the entire day, discussing it with this friend who warned me not to forget about it, and receiving an email earlier in the week telling me it was okay to remain on the waitlist but to ensure I switched back in time. I only mention these details to emphasize that it was not something I didn't notice or think about. Still, I was fixated on what I was doing and didn't realize how much time had passed until it was too late. Without my enrollment in the course, I would only be taking 2 courses and forced to wait until next year to take the class, which would seriously impact my degree plan as it is mandatory. I would likely have to take a 6th year instead of the 5 that I had planned.
For documentation, I did not receive a note from my doctor when I was diagnosed ?? I have called the clinic to ask about this and was told that my doctor would not be able to review and send my documents until next Monday. When it is sent, I will submit it, but in the meantime I will include a photo of my prescription.
I have already spoken with the instructor of the course (Leandre Fabrigar), and he assured me that should his permission be requested, he would approve.
I hope you??ll consider my request. In my previous years, my grades suffered because I had no treatment. I finally have the tools to succeed and reach my potential, but this mistake could be extremely detrimental to my future plan.
Thanks for taking the time to read this, I really appreciate it.
Sincerely,
Abdul Mosli
