Petition Letter
Dear Dr. Stephenson,
My name is Gracey Hammel, I am currently a BAH linguistics student reaching out to the Faculty with an appeal to withdraw for my courses in the current (Fall 2022) semester due to severe issues in mental health.Over the course of the past year, my mental health has impacted my ability to succeed in my studies in ways that I was unable to foresee. Since my Fall 2021 semester, following the passing of my grandfather, I??ve been struggling particularly with severe anxiety and long standing depressive episodes which have prevented me from attending and in certain cases passing my classes altogether. During this time, I had attempted to start certain medications prescribed by my doctor in hopes of seeing positive results, however the effects were either non existent even after several weeks, or the side effects of these medications actually worsened my symptoms. This present semester, I have been almost entirely unable to attend classes as a direct result of the severity of these issues and would like to inquire about the possibility of acceptance to withdraw my current classes for the Fall 2022 semester, and resume my studies in the Winter 2023 semester.
Due to the severity of the issues aforementioned, I have been unable to keep up with the most basic timelines that my life presented me with, and therefore was unable to complete the necessary documentation to secure my OSAP funding prior to the academic deadline of November 1st, and will in turn be unable to drop the classes this semester without severe academic penalty. It is my honest belief that the impact of the sudden death of my grandfather on both myself and my family back home, in combination with the strain I had already been experiencing in the wave of on and off Covid-19 restrictions and isolations was the series of events which caused me to suffer from the severe and extended levels of anxiety and depression which have lead me to this appeal process.
In regard to a future plan, with the support of my family and under the guidance of my physician, I have gained access to and have started medications to help me take back control of my life from my mental illnesses, the effects of which can already be witnessed in my ability to reach out and start the appeal process. In addition, with my physician I am further searching for the best fit for a psychotherapist who, once selected, I intend to see regularly to ensure that I will not slip into the destructive pattern that I am so determined to rebuild myself from. If my appeal is granted, I firmly believe that in the two months from now until the beginning of the Winter 2023 semester my access to effective medication and consistent therapy and the involvement of my support system back home will allow me the time and necessary tools to rebuild my mental state to one that truly reflects my true capabilities as a student at Queen??s University.
I am looking to restore the student that I was prior to these circumstances inhibiting my performance to the severity they have in recent months, and hoping that I am granted the opportunity to do so by the Faculty. I am open to further discussions on this matter either via email or in person, and am happy to submit a letter
Thank you in advance for your consideration,
Gracey Hammel
