Petition Letter
Dear Academic Appeal Committee,
I am writing this letter seeking to drop my first-year, fall elective class (ITLN 111). I chose Italian to be my elective being that it is simply a language class, and through that it would aid in my academic performance, as an easygoing class. However, since the beginning of the year, I have struggled to perform adequately in this class, due to the heavy workload, which lead me to perform much worse than anticipated in all my other classes. Examples of this are the 48% I received on my midterm (which I studied for), or a 58% I received on my second test (which I also studied for).
I am hoping to make it into the psychology program, or the political science program, for my second year, meaning that I must maintain my grades in both of these classes to have the opportunity of committing into any program. This puts me in an extremely large dilemma, because evidently, I will most likely fail out of my Italian class, which will then drop my GPA. I cannot afford to have my GPA dropped, being that I do not come from a wealthy family and need a scholarship to attend Queen's. Although I could have dropped Italian before, I wanted to keep going because I thought I could make up for my midterm on my second test, which I did not. Now, I must focus on studying for my psychology exam, coming up on December 7th, and cannot use more of my time to study for Italian, when I will inevitably fail it.
I continuously revise my notes and try to understand the course material, have taken the time to meet with my professor to explain the course material, and have even studied with a partner. None of these steps I took to deal with this extenuating circumstance has aided me in boosting my grade.
Please allow me the opportunity to focus on my other courses this exam season.
Sincerely,
Maxime Dalat
