Petition Letter
I am writing this appeal letter to get permission to drop GRMN 101 after the drop date deadline. I have been having serious family l problems and three weeks ago went through a traumatic event that has seriously affected my mental health and affected how I am able to function and participate in the classroom setting. It has also affected my work ethic and hindered my ability to thoroughly and confidently complete my assignments and tests. Three weeks ago my mom made the decision to leave my dad. Dealing with the fact they are splitting up is hard enough for me to deal with but since then my dad's mental health has taken a turn for the worse and two weeks ago he texted everyone in the family goodbye because he was going to kill himself. I was the person he called and I had to talk with him on the phone until someone at home found out where he was and made sure he was safe. The police were called and he has now been in the hospital for a week. Not knowing exactly what is going on and not being able to be with my family (as I live far away), has been extremely difficult for me especially during this time. This situation has drastically affected my mental health to the point where I have not been able to get out of bed or attend classes most days. I have applied for academic consideration and it has been approved, as difficult as it will be. I know I need to get back on track with my other courses but I do not think I will be able to with GRMN 101. In the last few weeks GRMN 101 is the course I have fallen behind most in and especially with it being a new language for me I do not feel like I will be able to catch back up. I have contacted and talked with all of my Professors about what is going on, I have also spoken to my therapist at home, and connected with someone from mental health services here on campus. I am trying to pick myself back up and be able to finish out my first university term strong and I truly feel the only way I will do that is if I am able to lighten my course load, just to help myself get back on track.
